Effective lower elementary teachers foster strong relationships and cultivate an open, welcoming, and enriching learning environment. They design engaging lessons that embed foundational skills and deliver targeted Tier 1 interventions. Additionally, they promote positive social skills, provide diverse literature to inspire reading, and facilitate inquiry‑based and Project‑Based Learning (PBL) activities. Collaboration with inclusion staff to support student needs and active participation in Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) – analyzing student data, refining instruction, discussing interventions, and assessing progress – are also key responsibilities.
Minimum QualificationsThe Hawaii State Department of Education requires a Bachelor’s Degree for teacher, librarian, or counselor positions (except designated Career and Technology Education (CTE) positions). Candidates who are not yet licensed must obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license within three years of hire. Upon hire a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit is required.
PaydayNew employees can expect their first paycheck within the first three pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or the previous business day) of every month.
Benefits- Compensation: 10‑month teachers shall be compensated for the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 10‑month salary schedule for a 10‑month work year.
- 18 days of paid sick leave and state/federal holidays. Six of these can be used for personal or professional development.

The state pays a portion of premiums for State‑sponsored medical, drug, vision, and adult dental plans. - Group life insurance: A free life insurance policy is provided for employees and retirees.
- Premium Conversion Plan:
Participants may increase take‑home pay by having the state deduct health care premiums before payroll taxes. - Flexible Spending Accounts:
Employees may reduce federal and state income taxes and social security taxes through a tax‑saving benefit program. - Retirement plan:
The state contributes to a retirement plan for eligible employees. Generally, employees with at least ten years of credited service and who are 62 or have 55 years of service with 30 years credited may retire and receive benefits. - Tax Shelter Annuity (TSA):
Eligible employees may participate in a pre‑tax annuity program. - Deferred compensation: A tax‑deferred retirement investment program is available through voluntary payroll deductions.
- Temporary disability insurance:
Qualified employees may be eligible for benefits under this program. - Social security:
The state contributes to an employee’s social security account. - Workers’ compensation:
Benefits for medical expenses and partial wage support may be available for workplace injuries. - Union & collective bargaining: 12‑month teachers are represented by the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
