The Counselor supports the University’s efforts to provide a safe, healthy, and accessible environment for all students. The Counselor serves the mental health needs of the increasingly diverse student body of Montana State University‑Northern by supporting and promoting student mental health and overall wellbeing efforts in collaboration with students, faculty, staff, and administration. The Counselor works collaboratively with members of the Student Wellness Center, the Division of Student Affairs, local behavioral health providers, and responding agencies in the development, maintenance, and delivery of a comprehensive, holistic, and culturally informed student life program.
The counselor provides specific, direct services to include brief, short‑term individual, group, and couples counseling; crisis intervention; campus mental health outreach, training, and program development; and serves as a resource liaison to other campus and community partners. The successful candidate will be a professional on an annual contract with a 9‑month term that aligns with the academic year starting mid‑August and ending mid‑May.
and Responsibilities
- Deliver culturally informed mental health services (individual, couple’s and group therapy) to eligible undergraduate and graduate students.
- Provide intake assessment and treatment planning to assist students define goals, plan action, and gain insight into their personal development.
- Develop and implement programs on wellness, mental health, and alcohol/drug education that provide support and/or a proactive approach to needs.
- Provide support, referral, and/or counseling as needed for students referred through the campus student conduct process.
- Respond to crisis and provide intervention.
- Outreach and consultation to administration, staff, faculty, students, families and the greater University community regarding mental health issues.
- Provide appropriate case management and record keeping in accordance with legal and ethical standards; produce accurate data reports about office usage and counseling issues/trends.
- Chair the campus CARE Team and serve as a liaison to the MSUN Behavior Intervention Team (BIT). Serve as the MSUN representative on the MUS Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Task Force. Participate in other meetings, committees, and projects as appropriate.
- Master’s degree in clinical or counseling psychology, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, or social work.
- Credentialed as a PCLC or SWLC in Montana.
- Demonstrated clinical experience working with adults, including crisis assessment and intervention.
- Licensed or license‑eligible in the State of Montana as an LCPC, LCSW, or psychologist.
- Clinical experience in a college counseling center setting.
- Experience developing and providing outreach and consultation services on a university campus.
- Clinical experience working with crisis intervention and risk assessment and safety planning.
- Understanding of mental health challenges and issues among college students.
- Demonstrated experience in program development and delivery.
- Demonstrated understanding of mental health challenges among marginalized populations such as Native American and LGBTQ students.
- Demonstrated sound management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrated literacy and proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications.
- Have effective and respectful interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate successfully with all members of the university community – students, faculty, staff, and families.
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to work in a dynamic environment, which may require responding quickly to urgent campus community needs and occasional work in the evening or weekend to meet student needs.
