About the Position

The Chemical Hygiene Officer and Science Facilities Liaison supports the science laboratories and programs (associated with both teaching and research) within the Marian

E. Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center (KINSC) by overseeing laboratory safety practices, receipt and disposal of lab materials, and the coordination of buildings-related needs. As the Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), this position is the primary liaison between the administration, faculty, staff, and students regarding laboratory safety, and is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the college s Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) in accordance with OSHA regulations.

This position is part of the staff team supporting the teaching and research labs and programs in the KINSC and will require collaboration with other team members including the KINSC Purchasing Manager and Budget Analyst, Instrument Specialists, Research Machinist, the Autoclave and Media Biological Laboratory Assistant, the UNIX Support Specialist, the Psychology Research Manager, the Animal Facilities and Organism Care Technicians, and the Strawbridge Observatory Manager.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Chemical Hygiene Officer (approximately 60%): Develop, review annually, and update the college s CHP to ensure compliance with current government regulations (OSHA, EPA, DEP)
  • Work in close coordination with the Campus Safety Coordinator in areas of KINSC laboratory safety, compliance, and management of hazardous materials and waste
  • Support and develop safety training for faculty, staff, and students in KINSC-based programs, in collaboration with Department/Program Chairs
  • Foster a culture of safety awareness where students feel empowered to ask questions and report unsafe conditions without fear of reprisal
  • Chair the Laboratory Safety Committee, as directed by the Provost s Office, and participate in other College committees related to safety, such as the Institutional Biosafety Committee, and the OSHA/Labor and Industry Workplace Safety Committee; work across constituencies as required by those activities
  • Coordinate the testing and certification of safety equipment, including fume hoods, biological safety cabinets, emergency showers, and eyewash stations
  • Maintain rigorous records of safety inspections, training sessions, incident reports, and safety equipment maintenance/certification
  • Conduct regular safety audits of all teaching and research laboratories, stockrooms, and prep areas
  • Manage the collection, labeling, storage, and shipment of hazardous chemical and biological waste in compliance with RCRA and DOT regulations in collaboration with the Campus Safety Coordinator
  • Maintain the online chemical inventory, including receiving and barcoding new chemicals, delivering incoming chemicals and supplies to appropriate labs or storage rooms, scanning out the barcodes from empty chemicals, and disposing of chemical containers
  • Collaborate with the KINSC Purchasing Manager and Budget Analyst on the purchasing of solvents, gases, and cryogenics for general use in the KINSC; coordinate the receiving and movement of these materials as needed throughout the KINSC
