Overview
The Nonprofit Accountant is responsible for managing the organization's financial operations with a focus on grant accounting, payroll administration, and bank reconciliations. This role ensures accuracy, compliance, and transparency in financial reporting while supporting program and leadership teams in stewarding nonprofit funds responsibly.
Key Responsibilities Grant Accounting & Compliance- Track and manage restricted and unrestricted grant funding
- Set up grant budgets in the accounting system and monitor expenditures
- Ensure grant expenses comply with funder requirements and organizational policies
- Prepare financial reports for grantors, including budget vs. actual reports
- Assist with grant audits, monitoring visits, and financial reviews
- Collaborate with program staff to ensure proper allocation of costs
- Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly
- Monitor cash flow and assist with cash forecasting
- Maintain accurate records of deposits, transfers, and disbursements
- Maintain accurate general ledger entries
- Prepare monthly and year-end closing activities
- Assist with financial statements and internal reports
- Support annual audits and preparation of schedules
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP, fund accounting)
- Maintain organized and audit-ready financial records
- Reconcile payroll reports to the general ledger
- Manage payroll-related journal entries and accruals
- Coordinate benefits deductions and payroll changes
- Other tasks as provided by supervisor
- Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
- Experience with grant accounting and fund accounting
- Payroll processing experience
- Strong reconciliation and analytical skills
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Fund EZ)
- Advanced Excel skills and Google suite
- Experience working with government or foundation grants
- Knowledge of nonprofit compliance and reporting requirements
- Experience supporting audits
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Collaborative and service-oriented mindset
- High level of integrity and confidentiality
- Hybrid (3 days in the Hauppauge Office and 2 days remote)
- Reports to the Finance Director
