Job Summary
The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a full-time, twelve-month, renewable non-tenure-track chemistry staff position of Laboratory Coordinator in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences to begin in February 2026. Responsible for day-to-day supervision of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry teaching laboratory programs. Duties consist of ongoing training and oversight of teaching assistants, laboratory preparation, assistance of students, grading, enforcement of laboratory regulations, maintenance of office hours, general logistics of laboratory management, and maintenance of a safe laboratory environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises teaching assistants in general and organic chemistry laboratories CHE 104L, 106L,107L, 110L, 251L, 255L, 256L, including promotion of chemical safety among teaching assistants and students.
  • Teaches 2 laboratory sections as needed.
  • Responsible for enrollment management, handling honor code violations, ADA accommodations, student advisement as needed.
  • Manages the chemistry tutorial center, including scheduling and supervising tutors, maintenance, and any reports generated.
  • Responsible for the design, construction and evaluation of educational materials, including quizzes and examinations for general chemistry and organic chemistry laboratories. Conducts weekly general chemistry and organic chemistry staff meetings to coordinate laboratory and lecture logistics.
  • Assists in maintaining physical facilities, equipment and instrumentation, and chemical stock for the general chemistry and organic chemistry laboratories.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master of Science in Chemistry from an accredited college or university or related field with 18 graduate hours in chemistry.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office, search engines, web-based applications for research, spectrophotometers, pH meters, gas discharge apparatus, balances, centrifuges, Lab Quest, and general laboratory tools and supplies.
  • Use and maintenance of lab instrumentation such as GC, FTIR, heater/stirrers, reaction apparatus and melting point apparatus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in managing a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduate chemistry laboratories.
  • Doctorate Degree.
