Nature of Work

The incumbent in this permanent part-time position typically works Monday – Friday (20 hours per week maximum). Work involves preparing and maintaining all files pertaining to Land Development Code/Building Code Enforcement including, but not limited to, detailed data entry, obtaining tax map parcel numbers, zoning, as well as flood and historical district information according to zoning and flood ordinances. Work is performed under general supervision, but employee should be able to work independently on daily duties, with initiative, independent judgment and discretion in all duties.

The incumbent will process building permit applications and issue building permits. Work involves considerable contact with the public and includes providing information related to building permit requirements and inspection procedures to contractors, design professionals and citizens.

Examples of Work
  • Accepts and processes building permit applications and related documents from the public; reviews applications and supporting documents for accuracy and completeness and determines the correct permit type needed; utilizes GIS mapping to determine zoning, historic district and flood zones to obtain information necessary to issue all types of building permits received by fax, mail, online via email and the customer service counter.
  • Monitors the permit review process by routing applications and plans; communicates with Planning, Code Enforcement and Fire Department to secure applicable approvals; tracks applications through the entire approval process; ensures timely processing of permit application requests.
  • Receives inspection requests from contractors/citizens and schedules for inspectors.
  • Answers multiple phone lines and has considerable public contact.
  • Qualifies contractors – daily ongoing update of contractor’s license and insurance; maintenance of contractor’s license.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Building Official or the Director of Urban Development, to include cross training in and supporting various other department roles as needed.
Qualifications

High School graduate with excellent record-keeping skills; good communication skills for extensive contact with the public; positive and professional attitude – ability to accept directions; must be computer literate (Microsoft Word, Excel, and other specialized programs). Must have the ability to utilize maps and portions of the City Ordinance and state laws which apply to the areas of work assigned. Qualified candidates must exhibit successful experience and/or skill in providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external customers.
