Overview

Job Title: Assistant Band Director
Reports to: Principal
Receives Guidance From: Director of Bands, Principal, Lead Teacher, Administrator
Overtime Status: Compliant with position, salary, and FLSA regulations

Position Summary

A teacher in the Lamar County School District is expected to help students learn required subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible men and women. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The Assistant Band Director supports the Director of Bands in the implementation, instruction, and administration of a comprehensive high school band program. This position focuses on high-quality music instruction, ensemble support, student development, and operational assistance to ensure the success and growth of the band program while aligning with the school district s academic mission.

Duties

And Responsibilities
  • Provide instructional support to band students under the direction of the Director of Bands
  • Assist with rehearsals and performances for marching band, concert band(s), pep band, jazz band, and small ensembles as assigned
  • Provide sectionals, small-group instruction, and individual student support
  • Reinforce music fundamentals, technique, and performance standards
  • Assist in maintaining a positive, structured, and inclusive learning environment
  • Support student leadership development and promote responsibility, teamwork, and discipline
  • Supervise students during rehearsals, performances, travel, and band-related events
  • Assist with equipment, instrument, uniform, and facility management
  • Help prepare facilities and materials for rehearsals, performances, and events
  • Support inventory tracking, distribution, and collection of band property
  • Assist with marching fundamentals, drill instruction, and visual performance
  • Support coordination with color guard, percussion, and auxiliary staff
  • Attend and assist with all required rehearsals, performances, contests, and assessments
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Bands, school administrators, faculty, and staff
  • Communicate effectively with students and parents as directed
  • Support feeder middle and elementary school band activities and recruitment efforts
  • Adhere to district policies, Mississippi Department of Education regulations, and professional ethical standards
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and required training
  • Maintain appropriate licensure and certification
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Bands or school administration
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and assist with conducting rehearsals
  • Ability to lift, move, and transport instruments and equipment
  • Ability to travel with students and work outside regular school hours
  • Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use
  • Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Regular, timely/dependable, in person attendance is an essential function of this position
  • Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy, state, or federal guidelines
  • Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, and all other district policies and applicable procedures and protocols as established by LCSD, and Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct
Qualifications
  • Education Level: Bachelor s degree or higher in Music Education or related field
  • Certification:
    Hold an appropriate Mississippi Teaching Credential or valid emergency certification issued by the state of Mississippi Educational Board, Licensure
  • Endorsement Code: 165 required
  • Other Requirements:
    Experience teaching or assisting with secondary-level band programs preferred; knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy and ensemble performance; strong organizational, communication and collaboration skills; willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required;
