Automotive Mechanic;

Overview

Examination is announced to supplement the current employment list to fill one (1) vacancy in the Department of Central Garage. The purpose of this position is to perform highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment. The employee in this class acts as a troubleshooter in determining problems on a wide variety of equipment, including cars, trucks, stationary engines, small pumps, and small portable equipment powered by internal combustion engines fueled with gasoline, diesel, and natural gas.

The position performs front/end repairs including wheel alignments and some tire balancing. This position repairs transmissions, clutches (single and double disc), electrical systems, changes batteries, starters, alternators and wiring. Test drives vehicles in the back lot to perform job duties. The position may supervise subordinate mechanics and/or assistants. The employee is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish.

A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are preferred due to driving a Parish vehicle. Significant, full-time, paid, verifiable journeyman-level work experience in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment is required.

• Perform front/end repairs including wheel alignments and some tire balancing.
• Repair transmissions, clutches (single and double disc), electrical systems; change batteries, starters, alternators and wiring.
• Test drive vehicles to verify performance and diagnose issues.
• Possibly supervise subordinate mechanics and/or assistants.
• Furnish all hand tools up to 1 inch openings if required by the employer.
• Drive a Parish vehicle as part of job duties where applicable.

• Significant, full-time, paid, verifiable journeyman-level work experience in the maintenance and repair of motorized equipment.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (preferred).
• Ability to furnish all hand tools up to 1 inch openings if required.
• Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above the minimum qualifications may be required for consideration of entrance salary above the minimum rate.
• Experience and qualifications may be supplemented by an examination process as described (written test, rating of training and experience, oral panel interview or combination thereof).
