Overview
Examination is announced to supplement the existing employment list to fill two (2) current West Jefferson vacancies in the Animal Shelter. This employment list will also be used for future East and West Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur. The purpose of this position is to enforce animal control laws and ordinances while responding to the needs of animals in the community.
Responsibilities- Handle duties involving animals including but not limited to rescuing, trapping, seizing, transporting, and impounding.
- Check vaccination records, issue warnings, and summons.
- Attend legal proceedings and communicate results to court officers or liaisons.
- Prepare investigative reports and perform property inspections.
- Enforce all animal control and anti-cruelty ordinances and statutes.
- Conduct daily patrols throughout the Parish.
- Respond to animal-related emergencies.
- Impound at-large dogs, cats, or other small animals; rescue animals in distress.
- Investigate complaints of animal abuse and enforce all animal control laws.
- Work scheduled standby to provide 24-hour service for seriously sick or injured strays and bring them to veterinarians for emergency treatment.
- Participate in job-related training courses during probationary period (approximately 240 hours).
- Perform animal retrieval/rescue work around bodies of water and participate in Slackwater Animal Rescue Training.
- This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty during evacuations as directed by the Parish President or designee.
- Position requires driving a Parish vehicle; possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency certificate;
PLUS significant experience (paid or volunteer) in caring for and handling animals in a facility such as an animal shelter, veterinary clinic, pet store, research lab, or similar facility. - SUBSTITUTION:
Successful completion of college coursework in animal health care, animal behavior, or a related field may substitute for the above required experience.
The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview, or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience, including a detailed description of work experience, names and addresses of all previous employers, and dates of employment.
