The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an experienced and dedicated professional as its next Vice President of Student Development. The Vice President of Student Development is a full-time, year-round senior leadership position responsible for overseeing all aspects of student life and development, fostering an environment that balances academic rigor with personal growth and well-being. This individual will work closely with faculty, staff, students, and families to create a supportive, inclusive, and high-performing community.
The Vice President will lead initiatives that promote emotional, social, and ethical development while ensuring a safe, healthy, and inclusive campus environment during the academic school year and summer programs. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a commitment to student-centered development, and a deep understanding of the needs of adolescents in both academic and social settings.
GSSM's mission is to seek out and advance the state's most talented and motivated students, offering them a transforming education with a special focus on science, mathematics, and engineering that cultivates joy in learning and builds the confidence to engage as ethical leaders with the world's most significant issues.
Key responsibilities of the Vice President of Student Development:
Leadership & Strategy (25%): Serve as a member of the senior leadership team, contributing to the overall strategic direction of the school.Lead and implement student development programs that promote a healthy and vibrant student life, ensuring alignment with the school's mission and values.Collaborate with faculty and staff to integrate student development initiatives across all areas of the school, including academics, extracurricular activities, and residential life.Collaborate with Enrollment Management to transition students from applicants to enrolled students.Collaborate with Outreach and Global Initiatives to provide a safe, healthy, and inclusive residential environment for visiting scholars.Student Well-Being & Support (15%): Oversee the delivery of student support services, in particular student health and wellness services.Develop and implement strategies to ensure the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of all students.Foster a positive and inclusive school culture.Residential Life (10%): Oversee the residential life program, ensuring that students' needs are met in the residence halls and that staff are properly trained to manage residential student development.Manage and support a variety of residential life initiatives that ensure a balance between academic rigor and personal development.Provide leadership in maintaining a safe, respectful, and nurturing residential community.Dining Hall Management (10%): Oversee the administration of the institution's Dining Services Contract by providing guidance to the Director for Dining Services to ensure satisfactory vendor performance through the delivery of nutritious and balanced meal offerings tailored to meet student needs and promote student engagement.Coordinate with the Director for Dining Services to address student dietary needs while aligning with wellness goals.Collaborate with other GSSM programs, such as Outreach and Admissions, to ensure a satisfactory dining experience for visiting and prospective students.Extracurricular & Co-curricular Programs (10%): Manage and support student involvement in extracurricular activities, clubs, athletics, and community engagement.Oversee the development of student leadership programs to cultivate responsibility, leadership, and community engagement among students.Academic Development & Engagement (10%): Work collaboratively with the academic leadership team to ensure student development aligns with academic goals and supports the STEM-focused curriculum.Promote academic achievement while also addressing the holistic development of students.Family & Community Relations (10%): Serve as a…
