Overview
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval includes award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Basic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency
- In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless proficient in basic written and spoken English
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following bodies at the time the program was completed: ACEN or CCNE
- OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program
- Upon achievement of a State license - appointment on temporary basis with later conversion to permanent upon successful completion of the bridge program

- OR For graduates of foreign nursing schools - possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration meets the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing
- Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree requires formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation service (e.g., ICD)
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State/Territory/Commonwealth (including District of Columbia)
- Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: candidates who meet basic education requirements but lack licensure may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level on a 120-day temporary appointment (may be extended up to two years) while pursuing licensure. Grandfathering provision applies to VHA staff as of 1/29/2024
- Preferred Experience:
3-5 years of Perioperative experience with adults 20-90+ years; BSN preferred - Grade determinations and dimension criteria are used to assign the appropriate grade and level
- Foreign education programs/degrees are not creditable as related degrees

- Physical Requirements:
All applicants must be physically able to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position - A pre-placement physical examination is required prior to appointment
- RN Staff - PACU/SDP - position located in Nursing Service at the WRJ location
- Full-time role at 40 hours per week
- Demonstrate leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies
- Partner with patients and team members for effective disease and care management
- Use the nursing process and evidence-based practice to collaborate with Specialty Providers, VISN facilities, PACT teams, Community Care, and the family/caregiver involved in providing care
- Collaborate with internal and external VA services to facilitate care transitions to meet patient needs
- Educate patients and families on pre-operative preparation and post-operative care, including surgical site infections, CAUTI, and CLABSI; serve as advocate for patients and as a team leader while pursuing ongoing professional growth
- Gather comprehensive patient health history, including systems review and preoperative testing results, identify issues impacting the surgical plan, and ensure up-to-date documentation for quality care
- Support professional development through evidence-based practice, research, and performance improvement initiatives
- Work schedule:
8- or 10-hour shifts, Monday–Friday; no holidays; compressed/flexible arrangements available; not a telework or virtual position
