Introduction
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is hiring Statewide CDL Drivers for all of our Highway Maintenance locations. - Valid CDL Class A or B with Tanker and Airbrakes endorsement. Tanker endorsement is required at the time of hire.
- Valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC). Applications will not be reviewed if license number, class, expiration date, or issuing state is not listed in the application.
- Bridge positions must meet OSHA : medically cleared for a respirator, no facial hair, equipment weight requirement, night work required.
The CDL Drivers will perform a full range of tasks in construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadways, bridges, and more. They will maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment or assist on larger equipment, accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal, and perform various storm events requiring on-site work for the duration of the storm.
Special RequirementsIncumbents must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required. Military members and recently honorably discharged veterans may qualify based on meeting the CDL Skills Test Exemption for Military Applicants.

Qualifications– Minimum
- One (1) year of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, or maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, working with mechanical equipment.
- Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a maintenance trade diploma may substitute for experience.
- Successful completion of the Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprenticeship Program may substitute for experience.
- Experience with snow removal
- Experience with landscaping
- Experience with construction
- Experience driving CDL vehicles
Incumbents are exposed to extremes of weather, frequent lifting of heavy weights, highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, exposure to heights on bridges, poison ivy, insect bites, allergy irritants during summer months, and loud and potentially dangerous machinery. An asbestos removal program may be required. Protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles may be required.
