Principal Consultant, Environmental FERC Project Manager (ERC)

Join ERM, a global sustainability consultancy, to lead and manage complex natural gas and LNG capital development projects across the United States. This role focuses on energy projects that require Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) permitting and compliance, including natural gas transmission and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The position can be based anywhere in the U.S.

Responsibilities
  • Manage large and complex projects, single or multi‑site, on time and within budget including scope, budgeting, resourcing, and coordination of field and technical work while managing health, safety, and risk aspects.
  • Serve as client point of contact on a project basis, lead an interdisciplinary team supporting environmental impact assessment, regulatory permitting, and compliance during construction, commissioning, start‑up, and operations.
  • Oversee multiple projects concurrently, including major natural gas, LNG, hydrogen, renewables, and carbon sequestration facility projects throughout the United States.
  • Generate technical proposals, identify new leads, and participate in business development with existing clients to maintain and grow client relationships.
  • Lead strategic meetings with regulatory agencies to address regulatory and legislative requirements such as state siting review applications and processes.
  • Engage with key regulatory agencies, including FERC, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Marine Fisheries Service, EPA, federal land management agencies, and State Historic Preservation Offices.
  • Contribute technical subject‑matter expertise on environmental critical issue assessments, impact assessment deliverables, and overall quality control reviews.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Studies, Planning, Geography, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geology, or a related natural resources science field, or equivalent experience.
  • Prior consulting experience and 6+ years (10 years preferred) of environmental impact assessment and natural resources permitting experience on FERC‑regulated projects.
  • At least 5 years of experience managing the permitting of large natural gas and LNG projects, including oversight of complex FERC applications.
  • Strong working knowledge of key natural resource regulations such as NEPA, Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, Sections 10 and 106 of the Rivers and Harbors Act, Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, and the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Experience with federal, state, and local permitting.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent research, writing, and presentation skills with a keen eye for detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative project team.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to convey complex technical knowledge to clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders.
Compensation

Annual base pay: $129,195 – $152,500 USD, based on education, qualifications, experience, and geographic location. Eligible for an annual discretionary performance bonus.
