Position

Writing Teacher – Hartford Youth Scholars, The Collegiate Academy, Fall 2026 & Spring 2027

About the Collegiate Academy

The Collegiate Academy (TCA) is Hartford Youth Scholars' 26‑month academic enrichment program, serving middle school students from Hartford. It is a community of motivated, compassionate, responsible, and hard‑working scholars who are committed to becoming competitive applicants for admission into, and success at, some of the area’s top high schools, including private, public, magnet, and charter schools. HYS recruits highly motivated 6th graders from Hartford schools, and scholars are selected based on a variety of personal and academic qualities.

Our goal is to reinforce, enrich, and expand our scholars’ education. Scholars are provided the meaningful opportunities, comprehensive resources, and accountability that teach and encourage them to become mature and industrious adolescents.

About Hartford Youth Scholars

HYS works with motivated students from Hartford—from middle school onward—for more than ten years, until they have successfully earned an undergraduate degree. At HYS we know that gaining admission to college is only the first step. We work with each scholar, as well as their families, striving to help them face and overcome obstacles they may encounter along their path to college graduation.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision and support of the Academy Dean, the Writing Teacher will develop lesson plans and teach writing to 7th and 8th grade scholars in the TCA. The role requires familiarity with writing standards and the critical skills needed for academic development at the middle‑school level, including grammar and mechanics, writing composition styles, and self‑ and peer‑editing. The teacher will guide scholars through written communication tasks across courses such as literature, mathematics, and science.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with middle‑school writing standards and curricula is preferred but not required.
• Prior experience teaching at the middle school or high school level is preferred but not required.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, along with the ability to create engaging, standards‑based lesson plans.
