Position Overview
Environmental Trainee (35 Hour) within the Materials Management and Compliance Assurance (MMCA) Engineering and Enforcement Division / Pesticide Management Program (PMP) – Hartford, CT. Full‑time first‑shift schedule (Mon‑Fri, 8:00‑4:00 AM or 8:30‑4:30 PM) with hybrid flexibility. Training duration: one to three years, culminating in promotion to Environmental Analyst I.
Responsibilities- Conduct investigative and compliance inspections of pesticide use, including in‑person observation of businesses, individuals, landscapers, exterminators, farms, and marketplaces.
- Document case development, write inspection reports, and communicate technical information to the public and regulated community.
- Assist with enforcement activities and case documentation.
- Perform background checks, maintain valid driver’s license, and complete required OSHA 40‑hour hazardous materials training.
- Bachelor’s degree in plant science, entomology, limnology, biology, ecology, chemistry, environmental science, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to obtain OSHA 40‑hour hazardous materials training.
- Knowledge of environmental policies, statutes such as FIFRA, WPS, Connecticut’s Pesticide Control Act, and state arborist laws.
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication, analytical, research, and organizational skills.
- Experience or training with pesticides, pesticide application equipment, or related laboratory methods is preferred.
- Ability to understand and interpret legislation and technical data; proficiency in computer software.
Competitive salary – $47,229 (Bachelor’s) to $48,933 (Master’s) per year during the first year of training. Eligibility for State of Connecticut benefits, health, pension, and employer‑sponsored Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
