PGAT appointments are fixed‑term contracts, typically one academic year, with possibility of renewal for a second year. The School provides training in teaching skills and transferable skills useful in other professions.
The role allows those wishing to pursue teaching to gain directly relevant experience and training, and those likely to move into another profession after Harrow to acquire beneficial skills in areas such as banking, consultancy and law.
The History and Politics Department comprises nine Masters, with expertise covering a wide range of periods from medieval to twentieth‑century history. Several members are actively researching and publishing; three hold doctorates.
History is a popular subject: three quarters of the year group take it to GCSE (CAIE IGCSE syllabus 0977BY), about half continue in Sixth Form. In Sixth Form, students follow OCR A Level (H505A) and Edexcel Politics (9
PLO 01/02/03B). The Department prides itself on achieving high academic results: 70‑80% of A‑level historians secure an A or better, 90% of students taking Politics achieve an A‑B. At IGCSE, more than 30% achieve Grade 9 and more than 65% achieve Grade 9 or 8. Many students progress to universities such as Oxford and Cambridge.
PGAT appointments are fixed‑term contracts with no specific minimum qualification requirements mentioned. The role is suitable for graduates seeking teaching experience or transferable skills.
