Apprentice - Cabling Engineer
As a Apprentice - Cabling Engineer you will work in world class data centres that run critical national infrastructure for the UK finance industry. You will work alongside Data Centre Infrastructure Engineers to ensure IT equipment and cabling are installed and maintained to allow critical services to run reliably.
Role- Cabling Installation and decommissioning
:
Installing new racks and cabling systems (copper Cat 6 and multimode fibre optic) according to specifications and industry standards. Decommissioning of redundant cabling systems and racks. - Cable Management
:
Ensuring proper cable routing, organization, and termination to maintain a tidy and efficient data centre environment. - Troubleshooting and Repair
:
Identifying and resolving issues with cabling infrastructure, including network connectivity problems. - Testing and Documentation
:
Conducting tests to ensure the quality and functionality of cabling systems and maintaining accurate documentation of the cabling infrastructure. - Equipment Installation and decommissioning
:
Assisting with the installation and configuration of network equipment, including servers, switches, and other hardware, and decommissioning equipment when it is no longer in use. - Environmental Monitoring
:
Monitoring the physical environment of the data centre, including temperature, airflow and power, and working with the Data Centre Engineering department to report issues and find solutions to any issues that arise. - Collaboration
:
Working with other Data Centre Engineers, contractors, and Network Engineers to ensure the smooth operation of the data centre. - Following Procedures
:
Adhering to safety regulations, industry standards, and company‑specific procedures.
- Technical Knowledge
:
Prior experience is not required, however it is desirable if you have already started or completed some relevant engineering or structured data cabling studies. What’s most important is that you have a desire to develop a successful career within Data Centre Infrastructure Engineering. - Troubleshooting Skills
:
Ability to assess and evaluate issues to diagnose and resolve problems related to cabling and network connectivity. - Physical Dexterity
:
Passion for hands‑on engineering work and comfort with hand and power tools, performing physical tasks, working in confined spaces, manual handling tasks, working at height and long periods on feet. - Attention to Detail
:
Ensuring accuracy in cable installation, updating records and testing. - Communication Skills
:
Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with team members, project teams and data centre staff. - Safety Awareness
:
Willing to prioritise safety in all tasks and work to best‑practice safety standards; required to attend Health and Safety related training courses on an ongoing basis. - Training
:
Willing to attend industry training courses throughout the apprenticeship and thereafter, such as structured cabling, health and safety, electrical safety, confined spaces, etc., and long‑term opportunities to expand skill set by working with the Data Centre Engineering team that maintain electrical and mechanical infrastructure. - Computer Skills
:
Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook and ability to learn how to use other company software applications. - General Attributes
:
Punctual and reliable, ability to work effectively on own and with others, flexible can‑do attitude, focused on delivering objectives, self‑motivated and excellent time management and prioritisation skills.
- Abide by Mastercard’s security policies and practices;
- Ensure the confidentiality and integrity of the information being accessed;

- Complete all periodic mandatory security trainings in accordance with Mastercard’s guidelines.
