Position: Facility Maintenance Volunteer (Unpaid)

JOB TITLE:

Facility Maintenance Volunteer

Since 1973, the RHSPCA has been providing compassionate animal care to help pets and people live happier, healthier lives. We offer a full range of services, including adoption options for companion pets and barn cats so that local animals can live better lives in the spaces that suit them best. We also work with a vast network of volunteers who help us care for animals in our shelter and individuals willing to foster pets in their homes.

In addition to our pet matchmaking services, we partner with community members to help manage the outdoor cat population through our Community Cat Program. Across all of these services is our commitment to providing the resources and tools our community needs to improve animal welfare.

FUNCTION:
To assist in the upkeep and maintenance of the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA to include weekly tasks as well as special projects as needed. This is an unpaid position. This role is purely voluntary and this arrangement is not legally binding or an employment contract. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Carry out general maintenance work and check the maintenance request log to ensure tasks are completed so the shelter can run efficiently. Examples include but are not limited to:
  • Repairing water bowls/replacing floats in dog kennels
  • Replacing bolts on kennels
  • Repairing guillotine doors on dog kennels
  • Occasional sink/faucet or outlet related repairs
  • Occasional pest control
  • Occasional groundskeeping when our usual service is unavailable (i.e. bush/tree trimming)
  • Upkeep of maintenance supplies
  • Develop a schedule of when regular tasks need to be completed (i.e. cleaning vents and replacing filters).
  • Provide recommendations for when a professional service is required.
  • Update staff members with progress, reporting any issues, and repairing damaged items as quickly as possible.

We are flexible in the volunteer’s schedule; however, it is preferred for the volunteer to have a set day they come in each week. Availability for emergency work is a plus. The volunteer may decide for themselves whether or not their work is required for the week depending on the maintenance request log.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Be able to work without supervision while following guidelines and instructions.
  • Be comfortable working on both short and long term maintenance projects.
  • Have good knowledge of repair work and general maintenance
  • Be conscientious, reliable, well organized, and a team-player
  • Be able to commit regularly to ensure jobs are seen through to the end
  • Be able to lift 35 lbs., stand for long periods of time, move quickly, work with and around animals, loud noises, chlorine or other chemicals.
