BRIEF OVERVIEW
The City of Harrisburg is accepting applications for a Streets Maintenance Worker I in the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Neighborhood Services. The employee in this position will be involved in maintenance, repairs and construction of various structures throughout the City of Harrisburg. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of the Bureau of Neighborhood Services or his/her designee.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

JOB TITLE
Streets Maintenance Worker I - Department of Public Works - Bureau of Neighborhood Services. GRADE 9
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
This is an entry level job involving maintenance, repairs and construction of various structures throughout the City of Harrisburg. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of the Bureau of Neighborhood Services or his/her designee.
JOB LOCATION/EQUIPMENT:
Work is performed throughout the City of Harrisburg on streets, right of ways, buildings and sewers in various locations in the City. Work involves the use of, but is not limited to, shovels, hammers, saws, paving equipment, picks, sledgehammers, tampers, portable mixers, jack-hammers, hand rollers, chain saws and small power tools. May operate safety equipment, such as gas detectors, harnesses, tripods, cones, barricades and hand-held flags.
Oversees work or crews in various day to day field operations. Operates motor vehicles, including pickups. Employees are subject to noise, vibrations, fumes, odors, toxic conditions, dust, poor ventilation and inclement weather.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Work involves but is not limited to the following: routinely inspects and repairs storm inlets and sinkholes (See "Equipment/Job Location" for tool list). Inspects City streets and makes repairs when necessary. Acts as a parts person for the Bureau of Neighborhood Services. Responsibility for inventory, ordering and control. Inspects, maintains and repairs equipment used in both standard and specialized services. Sets up and may use rescue retrieval system weighing up to 200 lbs.
with assistance of two (2) co-workers. Performs layout, measuring and assessment of materials needed to complete assigned projects. Remains alert and reacts appropriately to audio and visual alarms on vehicular equipment, gas detectors and rescue retrieval systems. Maintains regular, punctual and predictable attendance. Reports to work and remains at work in a productive condition which includes not being under the influence or impaired by the use of alcohol and/or drugs.
Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers and the general public. Completes all assignments in an efficient, consistent and timely manner.
NON
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs other reasonably related duties in equal or lower classifications as assigned by supervisory personnel. Performs work as directed by supervisor in accordance with Article XXX, Job Classifications, Section 1 provision of the Basic Labor Agreement.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
* Knowledge of operations and use of various types or equipment as listed above.
* Knowledge of roadway repairs and masonry work.
* Ability to perform minor service for various types of equipment.
* Ability to perform various types of construction work and repairs.
* Ability to understand and follow instruction.
* Ability to perform various levels of manual labor.
* Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms and hazardous situations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma, GED or any equivalent which provides the required knowledge and skills. Six (6) months prior experience working in the roadway construction field and/or sewer construction trade. A valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License, Class B with Tanker endorsement.
