Role Overview

The Patient Services & Support Manager will oversee a 24/7 portering service, inter‑site transport, and postal operations. The role requires strong leadership, logistical expertise, and a commitment to operational excellence across multiple departments and locations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead portering services across A&E, Pharmacy, X‑Ray, and other departments
  • Manage inter‑site transport and logistics for over 60 clinics across Essex, North London, and Hertfordshire
  • Ensure safe handling of sensitive items including patient records, pathology samples, and controlled substances
  • Oversee postal services and staff across hospital sites
  • Negotiate and manage contracts for taxis, couriers, and leased vehicles
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations and Trust policies
  • Manage staff rosters, training, performance, and development
  • Respond to complaints and coordinate with security services
  • Monitor budgets and maintain operational records
  • Lead the Portering Fire Team and ensure health and safety compliance
  • Coordinate electric vehicle operations and insurance claims
  • Oversee recruitment, retention, appraisals, and disciplinary procedures
  • Ensure staff are trained in handling medical gases and waste disposal
  • Liaise with internal departments and external contractors
  • Manage equipment inventories and develop replacement plans
  • Participate in the on‑call rota (1:7 basis) and lead team briefings
Required Skills and Experience Essential
  • Proven leadership and operational management experience
  • Strong logistical and organisational skills
  • Ability to manage multidisciplinary teams across multiple locations
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulations and compliance standards
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving abilities
  • Experience in budget monitoring and contract negotiation
Desirable
  • Experience in NHS or healthcare support services
  • Knowledge of carriage of dangerous goods legislation
  • Training in fire safety and medical gas handling
