The Radiology Quality and Governance Lead is a pivotal senior role within the Radiology department, responsible for driving and sustaining excellence in the quality of radiological services provided across the Trust. This position demands a strategic thinker and proactive leader who will implement and oversee robust quality management systems, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, regulations, and national standards such as IR(ME)
R and IRR.Working collaboratively with the Radiology management team, clinical staff, and wider Trust governance structures, the post holder will spearhead initiatives aimed at continuous quality improvement, patient safety, and service efficiency. They will lead on critical areas such as radiation protection, dose optimisation, equipment quality assurance, and audit programmes, fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and no-blame learning.

The role also includes managing and coordinating responses to external inspections and accreditations, guiding the department through complex governance processes while maintaining clear communication channels between all stakeholders, including patients,clinicians, and regulatory bodies.

Main duties of the job

Beyond operational management, this role is instrumental in staff development, delivering training and mentorship on quality management principles, risk assessment, and compliance standards, ensuring the Radiology team is equipped to uphold the highest standards in service delivery.

Job responsibilities

Scope and Range

Operational Responsibilities

  • Form an integral part of the Radiology Management team alongside the General Manager, CDC Imaging Manager, Radiology Workforce Lead, and the MR, CT, and X-Ray Modality Leads.
  • Serve as the Lead Radiation Protection Supervisor ensuring compliance with IR(ME)
    R 2024 and IRR 2017 regulations.
  • Lead on dose optimisation initiatives by chairing quarterly meetings and integrating updates into governance frameworks.
  • Collaborate with Superintendent Radiographers and Modality Leads to maintain the Imaging Equipment Quality Assurance Programme and address non-compliance.
  • Monitor and update local diagnostic reference levels, including conducting dose audits for compliance, in collaboration with the RPA.
  • Manage the implementation and continuous improvement of quality measures and document management systems within Radiology.
  • Coordinate the annual National Imaging Data collection and submission process.
  • Support Clinical Governance and Risk Management strategies within the Radiology service.
  • Act as a communication link between Radiology and Trust Corporate Governance.
  • Lead quality improvement projects, especially those related to dose optimisation, and present findings.
  • Maintain sufficient clinical work to uphold HCPC registration through ongoing professional development.
  • Stay updated on local and national policies and legislation relevant to Radiology and communicate changes clearly.
  • Ensure dissemination of quality information, including accreditation status, complaints, audit findings, and incidents at departmental and Health Care Group levels.
  • Manage the use and review of Standard Operating Procedures and policies.
  • Coordinate and lead the departmental audit programme, ensuring audit outcomes support service improvements.
  • Aid the Accreditation Manager in their work to gain QSI accreditation and then ensure accreditation is maintained.
  • Prepare quarterly newsletters and update departmental information boards.
  • Coordinate service user and stakeholder surveys, analyse feedback, and recommend quality improvements.
  • Facilitate external assessments and ensure compliance with visiting assessors’ requirements.
