The Utility Technician performs technical duties in support of the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s water treatment and filtration facility, storage reservoirs, and water distribution system. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe, compliant, and reliable drinking water service for the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with the repair, operation, installation, maintenance, and servicing of water mains, services, valves, hydrants, and related appurtenances
  • Perform restoration of disturbed areas, including asphalt pavement patching, concrete sidewalk repair, and restoration of vegetated areas
  • Assist in locating water lines, leaks, valves, and services
  • Perform water service taps
  • Inspect work performed by private contractors as required
  • Collect distribution system water samples and perform required testing for compliance and operational control
  • Assist with water treatment facility operations, including monitoring systems, routine sampling, testing, and chemical feed adjustments
  • Read, repair, and replace water meters
  • Perform minor routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles
  • Install, maintain, and repair fire hydrants and ensure year‑round access
  • Mow and trim grass around facilities, fence lines, dam faces, and rights‑of‑way
  • Maintain safety signage, warning devices, and traffic control at work sites
  • Respond to after‑hours emergencies as required
  • Monitor reservoir levels and perform periodic inspections
  • Prepare daily work reports
  • May be assigned to work as part of a DPW utility crew
  • Perform related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of water treatment and distribution system operations, including treatment techniques, instrumentation, laboratory procedures, and sampling
  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations, town ordinances, and departmental policies
  • Skill with operating job‑related tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Proficiency with computers and job‑related software
  • Strong problem‑solving, planning, and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, and stooping
  • Frequent lifting of light to heavy objects and climbing ladders
  • Use of tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity
  • Ability to distinguish colors and utilize sensory awareness (sight, smell, etc.)
  • Work performed in a water treatment plant and outdoors, including cold or inclement weather
  • Exposure to moving machinery and treatment chemicals; use of protective equipment required
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus one to two years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience (including apprenticeship or internship experience)
