The Refrigeration/HVAC Technician II installs, repairs, and maintains the College’s refrigeration, air‑conditioning, and chilled‑water systems; performs routine maintenance on HVAC equipment for all College and athletic facilities; and responds to off‑hour emergency needs. The Technician also assists in servicing the ammonia refrigeration system in the Thompson Arena ice rink and maintains a high level of skill on all aspects of the trade, assuming responsibility for complex assignments.
Required Qualifications- High‑school graduate with some post‑secondary technical training, or the equivalent.
- Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in refrigeration and 3‑5 years in the electrical trade (or equivalent).
- Universal license in refrigeration from a recognized organization.
- Valid Dartmouth Approved Driver license.
- Working knowledge of industrial, commercial, and residential refrigeration and air‑conditioning systems, including low‑voltage electrical systems, refrigeration cycle principles, temperature measurement, refrigerant properties, heat transfer laws, pipe joining techniques (solder, braze, mechanical), and blueprints/wiring schematics.
- Awareness of ammonia‑based refrigeration systems.
- Experience with trade tools such as torches, gauges, and multimeters.
- Knowledge of safety codes, building codes, and environmental standards.
- Ability to operate hoists, quick‑sets, pulleys, and perform demanding manual tasks at heights.
- Capacity to participate in the College’s respiratory protection program.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, independent work under minimal supervision, and sound judgment.
- Strong customer‑service and communication skills; ability to explain work to college employees and building occupants.
- Computer skills: basic word processing, spreadsheets, and familiarity with building system programs and work‑control systems.
- Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
- One‑ to five‑year apprenticeship in refrigeration and/or electrical work.
