The purpose of this position is to advance the processing of nickel-based superalloys using directional recrystallization of additively-manufactured rods. The project involves detailed microstructural characterization of the additively-manufactured rods both before and after directional recrystallization. The project may also involve further development of the equipment used for directional recrystallization processing.
Responsibilities:
- Undertake directional recrystallization processing of additive-manufactured rods of nickel-based superalloys produced by collaborators and determine the best processing conditions through detailed microstructural characterization.
- Refine the directional recrystallization processing equipment.
- Author or co‑author research findings.
- Present findings at conferences.
- Assist with writing grant proposals and obtaining funding.
- Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience in thermomechanical processing of metallic materials.
- Experience in advanced microstructural characterization of materials, particularly using electron back scattered diffraction imaging and analysis and X‑ray diffraction analysis.
- Candidates from members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in science and engineering are encouraged to apply.
- Demonstrated research ability and vision, excellent written and spoken communication skills, and comfort working both collaboratively and independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in Materials Science and Engineering.
- Familiarity with thermo‑mechanical processing of metallic materials.
- Expertise in electron back scattered pattern analysis of material.
- Expertise in X‑ray diffraction.
