Position Purpose

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Endowment Administration leads oversight of compliance activities related to Dartmouth’s endowment funds. The role ensures new and existing agreements meet endowment policies, legal obligations, and donor intent, and coordinates policies across Dartmouth’s departments.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and 6 or more years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, customer‑service, and collaboration skills to interact with senior leadership, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, attention to detail, and sound judgment.
  • Ability to recognize policy conflicts and communicate them effectively.
  • Well organized with the ability to prioritize, work independently, and as a team member.
  • Familiarity with accounting and budgeting concepts, especially in non‑profit organizations.
  • Strong management and supervisory experience.
  • Exercise high discretion and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and ability to learn new software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Comprehensive understanding of endowment principles and related legal issues.
  • Prior experience with legal research and interpretation.
  • Experience in higher education or non‑profit settings.
  • JD or paralegal certificate.
Key Accountabilities Endowment Fund Administration (40%)
  • Oversee creation, modification, and review of new and existing endowment funds.
  • Evaluate supporting documentation to determine donor intent and compliance.
  • Address restricted term concerns and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare narrative summaries for financial and development use.
  • Catalog funds and maintain documentation in a digital repository.
  • Research donor documents across Dartmouth locations.
  • Compile accounting histories and reconcile balances with the Endowment Fund System.
  • Communicate with fiscal officers for current endowment utilization.
  • Assist in identifying impracticable restrictions and facilitate amendments or cy‑pres petitions.
  • Ensure all funds comply with FASB and NH UPMIFA reporting standards.
Inter‑Department Activities (30%)
  • Analyze legal and compliance issues for endowments and recommend resolutions.
  • Provide guidance on accounting, budgeting, and reporting to Advancement, Stewardship, and Fiscal Officers.
  • Collaborate with senior advancement leaders on solicitation language and gift instruments.
  • Evaluate documents against endowment criteria and coordinate compliance actions.
  • Work with Institutional Accounting on classification and accounting of funds.
  • Consult on non‑endowment gift funds to align practices across the Advancement division.
Management Duties (20%)
  • Supervise daily activities of the Endowment Administration Office staff.
  • Hire, delegate, train, and support staff development.
  • Foster a positive, team‑oriented environment through effective communication.
  • Set annual departmental and individual staff goals, complete performance evaluations, and provide development opportunities.
  • Continuously assess and improve office performance and services.
Data and Policy Management (10%)
  • Collaborate with ITC on endowment administration systems and suggest process improvements.
  • Maintain data and records management practices and evaluate new storage solutions.
  • Review and update endowment policies to align with institutional goals.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate professionalism and collegiality in all interactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
