Position Purpose

Under supervision from the Custodial Squad Leader or Custodial Supervisor, perform a wide variety of tasks; cleaning and unskilled building maintenance, event set‑ups, and animal and insect control, which include medium to heavy lifting activities inside and outside a variety of the College’s facilities. These facilities could include office space, laboratories, eating facilities, public areas, auditoriums, etc. Implements recycling procedures. This posting is for 3rd‑shift position.

1–2 years of experience.

Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • One year experience related to custodial work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy industrial cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, powered scrubber, buffer, carpet shampooer) and other hand‑operated tools.
  • Must be able to use a step ladder to clean lighting fixtures, replace light bulbs, etc.
  • Ability to understand and/or knowledge of safe use of various chemical substances used in cleaning purposes and insect control.
  • Familiarity or ability to learn different table/chair arrangements for event set‑ups.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor, including lifting and carrying light to medium weight objects.
  • Must be willing to work mandatory overtime as required.
  • Must successfully complete the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
    Hazard Communication, Blood‑borne Pathogens.

Day‑to‑Day Duties
  • Unlock and lock assigned spaces; clean, mop, strip, wax, and buff all hard‑surface floors (e.g., stairways, public restrooms, kitchen areas, laboratories, dining rooms, hallways). Vacuum and shampoo carpeted offices, hallways, and common areas. Wash windows (inside and outside) in entrance halls. Dust office furniture and window sills.
  • Clean public restrooms and showers; scour, disinfect, and deodorize toilet bowls and sinks; wipe and clean counters/vanities; polish mirrors; replace and stock restroom supplies.
  • Empty office and common area trash cans; implement FO&M recycling procedures; pick up, bag, and remove all trash inside the building as well as loose trash around building perimeters to designated areas.
Event Setup and Breakdown
  • Perform major setup and breakdown for college events (average 30 8‑ft tables and 350 chairs). Set up a variety of planned events based on the design of the arrangement specified in the work order; set up and place tables, chairs, lecterns, podiums, dividers, platforms, coat racks, etc.
  • On an as‑needed basis, clean light fixtures and replace light bulbs using a step ladder as necessary.
  • Place covers on tables.
  • Sweep dirt and leaves and shovel snow from walkways; spread sand on walkways at least 3 ft from all entrances to buildings at the start of and throughout the day.
Animal and Insect Control
  • Set traps to catch a variety of rodents and take captured rodents to outside area for release.
  • Spray inside and outside of buildings with various chemicals to control insects.
  • Keep notes of cleaning materials and equipment needed; notify Squad Leader when more materials are needed or when equipment is in need of repair or replacement.
  • May, on occasion, act in the squad leader's absence or assist the squad leader.
