Description

The City of Hanford seeks to fill fifteen (15) vacancies in the Parks & Community Services Department - Recreation Division. These are seasonal positions for the Summer Program.

Under general supervision, incumbents assist in recreation work involving sports, community center, playgrounds, pool, ice rink, senior citizens, therapeutic recreation, and cultural events. Incumbents will assist in planning and coordinating recreational activities for various ages and special interest groups. They assist city staff in recreational events and special trips. When assigned to the aquatic facility, this position will perform swimming pool duties and supervise patrons, enforcing all policies, procedures, and safety regulations related to the operation of the Aquatics Program.

When assigned to the ice rink (Winter Wonderland), incumbents may take on the role and responsibilities of an Elf during the Santa Experience. May perform other related duties. Incumbents may be required to work evenings and weekends.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Recreation Leader I is the entry-level position in a three-level Recreation Leader series. This position is for recreation employees who do not require previous recreation leadership skills. Employees in this class perform related duties according to established procedures. Various tasks may be assigned, but each step usually follows a pattern established and explained before work starts.

The Recreation Leader II is the mid-level position in a three-level recreation series. It distinguishes itself by having an increased level of experience, requirements, and responsibilities.

The Recreation Leader III may perform professional, recreational work involving staffing and supervising the aquatics program. The lead responsibilities, experience level, and education requirements distinguish this from other part-time recreation classifications.

Examples of Duties
  • RECREATION LEADER I:
    Performs assigned program duties, concession, and/or admission duties.
  • Distributes and collects program equipment and supplies.
  • Records daily attendance and receipts.
  • Performs essential participant safety inspections.
  • Performs general maintenance.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • RECREATION LEADER II:
    Directs and assists in planning, scheduling, and instructing recreation programs such as playground, swimming, ice skating, and senior citizen programs.
  • Keeps inventory and maintains recreation equipment.
  • Responsible for communication with the public regarding programs as well as with participants and others involved in implementing recreation programs and activities.
  • Responsible for program area safety through supervision and inspection, as well as requests for repairs.
  • May be responsible for the supervision of Recreation Leader I.
  • May perform minor maintenance.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on program attendance.
  • Performs other duties as related.
  • RECREATION LEADER III:
    Plans, organizes, and supervises various programs.
  • Promotes programs and provides information through news releases, flyers, and personal contacts with the public and organizations.
  • Participates in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating part-time, seasonal, or volunteer staff.
  • Coordinates scheduling of facilities and services for assigned programs.
  • Establishes and enforces standards to protect spectators, participants, and employees.
  • Collects and deposits money from concession and admissions.
  • Purchases and delivers equipment and supplies for programs.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • RECREATION LEADER I:
    Basic recreation activities and/or programs with leadership skills; ability to work cooperatively with community groups, participants, and the public; ability to keep accurate records; ability to use a cash register.
  • RECREATION LEADER II:
    Principles and techniques of planning, organizing, and directing various recreation activities; general pool safety and first aid; basic personal experience in aquatics; ability to work cooperatively with community groups, participants, and the public.
  • RECREATION LEADER III:
    Recreation activities suitable for all ages; aquatic facility emergency procedures; pool health and safety standards; public relations techniques; record keeping basics; basic supervision.

Ability To:

  • RECREATION LEADER I:
    Work well with various ages and special interest groups; confidently work with a large number of youth and/or adults; carry out instructions without close supervision; work cooperatively with community groups, participants, and the public; provide customer service.
  • RECREATION LEADER II:
    Organize and teach special learning skills and/or supervise activities, groups, and individuals; keep accurate records.
