Position: Water Operator I/II (DOQ)

Overview

The City of Hanford is seeking to fill one (1) Water Operator vacancy in the Utilities and Engineering Department - Utilities Division. This position performs a variety of work in the maintenance of the City's water production and distribution systems; to assist with providing, maintaining, and repairing the City's potable water services; and to provide utilities maintenance support to an assigned supervisor.

Water Operator I is the entry-level class in the Water Operator series, typically with little or no directly related work experience and under supervision while learning job tasks. Water Operator II is the journey level class, distinguished by the full range of duties and only occasional instruction. This class is distinct from the Senior Utilities Maintenance Worker, who supervises staff and performs the most complex utilities maintenance work.

Responsibilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment, machinery and control systems related to wells and other water sources for imported water transmission mains, pumping stations and storage facilities.
  • Monitor water supply and pressure with telemetry (SCADA) equipment; adjust pumps and valves to maintain proper zone pressure.
  • Repair and maintain structures for wells and booster stations; take meter readings, and perform well soundings and hydrant tests.
  • Monitor and maintain chlorine levels; inject chlorine at well sites as needed.
  • Take water samples and assist water quality staff as necessary.
  • Handle complaints and answer questions from the public; respond to water quality complaints and perform water quality duties if required.
  • Issue citations for water violations; collect money for payment of fines; shut off and restore water service.
  • Assist with roadway and/or concrete patching in the repair of underground pipes and equipment as necessary.
  • Perform routine maintenance on tools and supplies; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public; foster an environment of diversity, integrity, trust and respect.
  • Be an integral team player with flexibility, cooperation and clear communication.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Water Operator I
    • Knowledge Of: Functions, characteristics, and proper care and use of tools, equipment and materials used in basic water supply systems and/or storm drainage pump stations and related facilities; techniques for reading and recording meters and related instruments; safe work practices.
    • Ability To: Perform semi-skilled preventative maintenance activities; follow safety rules; learn to operate a variety of maintenance equipment and water sampling techniques; monitor and regulate potable water supply; maintain records; communicate effectively; work regular hours and adhere to safety procedures.
  • Experience and Education
    • Experience: Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Some experience working on pumps, machinery, electrical wiring or related equipment is desirable.
    • Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • License and Certificate
    • Possession, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Class B driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements within six months of appointment.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Grade 1 Water Treatment Operator certificate (T1) or appropriate license as determined by the State Water Resources Control Board within 18 months of appointment.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator certificate (D2) or appropriate license as determined by the State Water Resources Control Board within 24 months of appointment.
  • Water Operator II
    • Knowledge Of: Practices and techniques of preventative maintenance and repair of water distribution systems; operating principles of equipment related to the City's storm drainage pump stations and water supply system; pertinent codes, ordinances, policies, regulations and standards.
