The City of Hampton is seeking an Animal Response Team Services Manager to lead the animal control operations, shaping how the City protects both people and animals. This role plans, organizes, and oversees a major division within the Police Department, ensuring animal control services are delivered with professionalism, compassion, and compliance with state and local law.

- Requires a bachelor's degree in animal control management, law enforcement management, business administration, public administration or closely related field of study.
- Requires a minimum of five years of full-time equivalent work experience with State and local laws and ordinances related to animal control to include a minimum of three years supervisory and administrative experience and experience in developing administrative guidelines and implementing programs, policies and procedures or closely related experience.
- Advanced animal control training such as Virginia Animal Control Association (VACA) Basic Animal Control Academy.
- Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Performs duties under the limited supervision of the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
- Requires a high degree of responsibility, initiative and the ability to work independently.
- Extensive contact with City departments and the general public.
- Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
- May be required to work non-standard hours to include some weekend and evening hours.
- Considerable travel within the City of Hampton is required.
- Must be able to maintain the ability to provide credible testimony in court, to the magistrate and in other situations where credibility will be of importance. A sustained finding of untruthfulness at the conclusion of an internal investigation may result in immediate termination.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
