Works with the supervision of the Optical Manager and Practice Director. Designs, fits, and adapts lenses, frames, and contact lenses for patients according to written optical prescriptions or specifications. Assists patients with selecting frames, measures patients for eyeglass sizing, coordinates frames with facial and eye measurements, and matches them with optical prescriptions. Prepares lab orders with instructions for grinding and mounting lenses in frames and verifies the exactness of finished spectacles.
Adjusts frame and lens positions to fit patients. Performs administrative duties such as tracking inventory, submitting patient insurance claims, bookkeeping, and maintaining displays of optical merchandise.
- Maintains Medicare claim information with at least 80% compliance to Medicare standards. Ensures charges posted in COS, patient receipts, and ABN forms are completed correctly and obtains delivery signatures and dates.
- Collects insurance plan authorizations, accurately explains plan coverage and limitations to patients, calculates, files, and collects any co-payments and surcharges under patient vision or discount plans. Enters patient data, insurance, prescription, and purchase information accurately into the computer system. Collects a minimum of 50% of the order balance before placing an order, posts payments, and provides invoices. Upon dispensing eyewear, verifies, collects outstanding balances, and updates order status to DELIVERED.
- Maintains high customer‑service expectations for patients, families, physicians, optical team members, and visitors. Resolved patient service issues—including lab manufacturing delays and frame back orders—to achieve equitable solutions and reduce refunds, with manager approval.
- Ensures frame inventory meets patient style and vision needs, arranges and maintains displays of optical merchandise, and vendorizes frame boards, keeping inventory clean, dust‑free, and free of markings.
- Maintains knowledge of new optical products, technologies, compliance standards, billing, and lab ordering processes. Completes annual competency requirements within the required timeframe. Participates in additional optical industry training organized by the manager and director. Supports the Riverside Health System Code of Conduct, Compliance and Ethics Program and reports potential compliance concerns.
- Accurately inspects optical items to verify that eyeglasses meet order specifications and industry manufacturing standards. Dispenses, adjusts, repairs, edges, tints, and performs bench work; troubleshoots vision issues; documents steps taken and refers to doctor’s care when necessary. Performs duties of an Optical Lab technician as required. Remakes average does not exceed 3% of patients serviced.
- Ensures patient satisfaction by greeting them as they enter the optical department, completing all order processes in a timely and accurate manner while the patient is present, and keeping wait times to a minimum.
- Average sale $200.00 after discounts and insurance collections.
- Frame purchases do not exceed frame sales. Reviews frame purchases and cost‑of‑goods reports monthly with the optical manager. Returns special‑order and warranty products within 5 days of patient non‑approval or pick‑up of warranty replacement. Reviews lab invoices for accuracy and submits corrected invoices for credits. Updates the optical monthly expense report weekly with lab invoice totals.
- Education:
High school diploma and/or Opticianry Apprentice School. - Experience:
Retail experience dealing with a variety of people is helpful; optical retail experience preferred.
