Overview
The purpose of this class is to provide first-line supervision within the Hampton Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division. Employees in this class are responsible for supervising correctional personnel, overseeing the daily operations of the correctional facility, and ensuring the safety and security of staff, inmates, and the public through the enforcement of applicable federal, state, and local laws, policies, and procedures. Work includes inmate care and control, staff supervision, facility security, documentation, and compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Work is performed under the direct supervision of a Lieutenant, and the incumbent is accountable for the use of delegated authority. Pursuant to §53.1-29 of the Code of Virginia, Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) requirements, and Hampton Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, the incumbent must qualify to carry and use firearms. Pursuant to §15.2-1603 of the Code of Virginia, the incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff.
- Supervise, train, evaluate, and discipline correctional staff; serve as senior Field Training Officer (FTO).
- Assign and monitor work duties; conduct rounds and inspections to ensure operational readiness.
- Oversee inmate custody, care, and control, including intake, housing, movement, transportation, and release.
- Respond to and manage emergencies such as disturbances, medical incidents, fires, and suicide prevention events.
- Conduct security checks, searches, and inspections of facilities, equipment, vehicles, and inmates.
- Review and approve reports, logs, grievances, and maintain accurate inmate records.
- Verify court documents, warrants, detainers, and related legal paperwork.
- Supervise inmate work details and oversee facility supplies, sanitation, and maintenance needs.
- Ensure confidentiality of sensitive information and perform Corrections Deputy duties as required.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance; perform other related duties as assigned.
- Requires current service as a Deputy, Master Deputy, or Sergeant.
- A minimum of three (3) consecutive years of correctional experience, or equivalent substitutions as permitted by policy, including qualifying education, law enforcement experience, military service, or corrections experience.
- The THIRD (3rd) year of experience can be SUBSTITUTED with one of the following:
- A Bachelor’s Degree, OR An Associate Degree (Criminal Justice)
- TWO (2) years of Law Enforcement experience
- TWO (2) years of Corrections experience
- FOUR (4) years of Military experience (Honorable Discharge)
- Must have a minimum of ONE (1) year of experience in the correctional field AND DCJS Certification, PLUS
- Retired Military (Honorable Discharge), OR Retired Law Enforcement.
- Retired Corrections Officer, AND completion of the DCJS Academy.
- Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion.
- This position is safety sensitive and subject to alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance with the City’s substance abuse policy.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
- Authorization for Release of Information form and Agility Test form are required.
- Must be in good physical condition and pass the Agility & Written Tests.
- Must possess good oral and written communication skills.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, and record-keeping skills.
- Must be willing to accept an assignment to any shift or division.
- The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during city emergencies, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
