Description

Hampton University invites applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics. This is a senior-level appointment with tenure, with an anticipated start date of Fall 2026.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading Historically Black College and University (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. Hampton University is classified as an R2 (Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity) institution, with aspirations to strengthen and advance toward R1 status.

The Department of Mathematics is one of nine departments in the School of Science (including Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Communicative and Speech Disorders, Marine and Environmental Science, Physics, and Physical Therapy). The department offers a range of service courses to students across all disciplines, a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics, a minor in Mathematics, and a 5-year math educator program culminating in a B.S. in Mathematics and a Master of Arts in Teaching.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Chairperson serves as both an administrator and a senior faculty member. The Chairperson works closely with the Dean, Assistant Dean, and department faculty and reports directly to the Dean of the School of Science.

Responsibilities include:
  • Providing leadership to ensure smooth and effective departmental operations.
  • Fostering shared governance by creating and coordinating department committees.
  • Supporting a collegial, inclusive academic environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, and service.
  • Representing the department within the University and externally, articulating its vision and advocating for resources.
  • Creating a welcoming academic and physical environment that attracts and supports undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff.
  • Modernizing the curriculum and encouraging interdisciplinary connections.
  • Initiating innovative teaching, outreach, and recruitment activities that promote enrollment, retention, and program visibility.
  • Seeking external funding to grow the research enterprise and support scholarships.
  • Overseeing departmental functions including class scheduling, mentoring early-career faculty, and promoting collaborative research.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in leadership, research, teaching, scholarly activity, grantsmanship, and service.
  • Experience teaching students with diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain professional networks that support departmental growth and collaboration.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and stakeholders across a wide range of academic and administrative interests.
Compensation

Salary range for this position is commensurate with experience.
