Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.
This position exists to provide high-quality workforce training to community members and, in turn, provide industry partners with skilled tradespeople. The Full‑Time Structural Fitting Instructor directly supports Workforce Development’s MTT Structural Fitting program that provides skilled trades graduates the opportunity to obtain entry‑level positions as Shipfitters at Newport News Shipbuilding. This position will provide all theory and hands‑on training in this program.

Required Qualifications- High School graduate or equivalent
- Demonstrated work‑related or on‑the‑job experience as a Structural Fitter
- Experience in fitting or fabrication
- Knowledge of structural fitting tools and equipment
- Knowledge of troubleshooting and performing basic maintenance on structural fitting equipment – knowledge of ship structures
- Knowledge of ship orientation
- Knowledge of ship traversing terminology
- Knowledge of blueprint reading
- Knowledge of safe work practices in the fitting and welding field; knowledge of math and measurement
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or similar software
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and work with individuals at all levels
- Attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality
- Ability to apply welding and structural fitting theories to practical applications
- Ability to assess learner performance and progress and to provide appropriate feedback
- Ability to measure, assess and align learner outcomes within courses
- Ability to serve the needs of traditional and non‑traditional students
- Ability to plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize documented student learning
- Ability to manage a class which includes live work, lectures and labs on site and off site
- Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality
- Ability to maintain complete, accurate educational records
- Ability to adapt to state requirements, local needs, and national trends
- Ability to use Email (Outlook), Microsoft Word, and Excel
- Experience in a community college setting
