About the Position
Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad is seeking a Track Laborer to assist with the construction, maintenance, and repair of railroad track infrastructure including rail, ties, switches, and ballast to ensure safe train operations.
Pay and Benefits
• Starting pay:
Approximately $32 per hour
• Health insurance available upon employment
• Dental and vision insurance available after one year
• Covered under the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) retirement system
What You'll Do
• Work as part of a crew to construct, repair, and maintain railroad track
• Remove and replace defective rails and ties
• Drill rails for bolt insertion using hand or power drills
• Drive spikes into ties using spike mauls or pneumatic tools to secure rail
• Tighten or loosen track bolts using track wrenches
• Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment from trucks
• Assist with ballast work and general track maintenance
• Perform other duties related to track maintenance as assigned
Work Environment
• Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions
• Walking and working on ballast and uneven terrain
• Exposure to dust, noise from power tools, and outdoor elements
Physical Requirements
• Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and climbing
• Standing and walking for extended periods on uneven ballast surfaces
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy materials and tools
• Reaching above shoulder level and performing repetitive manual tasks
• Grasping and handling track materials such as spikes, bolts, and tools
• Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions
Schedule
Railroad operations run 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
The following experience is not required but is preferred:
• Welding experience or welding certification
• CDL Class B with air brake endorsement
• Mechanical aptitude with experience in diesel and gas engines
• Hydraulic system experience
• Heavy equipment operation experience
This is a union represented position. After a 60 day training period, employees must join the appropriate union and pay union dues.
