The Staff Accountant supports the financial operations of a heavy civil construction company by performing general accounting duties, maintaining accurate financial records, and assisting with financial reporting, cost tracking, and compliance. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that project-related costs are properly recorded and that financial controls are followed across multiple job sites.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform general ledger accounting functions including journal entries, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities.
• Assist with job cost tracking, including reviewing and coding invoices, timesheets, equipment usage, and subcontractor payments.
• Maintain fixed asset schedules and track capital expenditures related to construction equipment and infrastructure.
• Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for internal and external financial audits.
• Monitor compliance with company accounting policies and procedures, especially related to labor, materials, and overhead allocation for job costing.
• Assist with the preparation of monthly financial statements, internal management reports, and project profitability analysis.
• Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and operations staff to ensure accurate cost reporting and billing.
• Support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, including invoice entry, collections follow-up, and payment processing.
• Reconcile bank statements and credit card accounts.
• Assist with payroll processing and union reporting where applicable.
• Help ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax and regulatory requirements related to the construction industry.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 2+ years of accounting experience; construction industry experience strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of construction accounting principles (e.g., WIP, percentage-of-completion, job costing).
• Proficiency in accounting software, (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or similar).
• Advanced Excel skills and attention to detail.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with union payroll or certified payroll reporting.
• Familiarity with project management or ERP systems used in construction. Specifically, Viewpoint Vista
• CPA or progress toward certification is a plus.
