Position PurposeReporting to the Lines Supervisor, the Power Cable Technician is responsible for utilizing safe work practices and procedures in the construction, maintenance and troubleshooting of underground electrical distribution systems up to 44 kV. The incumbent is responsible to work safely and efficiently as part of a crew completing all work assigned to the applicable Alectra standards.
Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities- Construct and maintain the underground portion of the electrical distribution system.
- Participate in job planning / tailboard conference.
- Setup work area protection.
- Perform approved underground system live work up to 28 kV using rubber gloves, protective cover-up equipment and live line tools.
- Install, maintain and operate underground system components such as switch gear, transformers, cables, splices and terminations in ground and confined spaces.
- Install and maintain PILC cable, splices and other components (Western region only).
- Participate in the Lead Control Program (Western region only).
- Operate motorized vehicles and equipment (e.g., portable generators, power saws, hydraulic presses, battery presses, cable cutters and drills) safely.
- Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections.
- Execute switching instructions on the underground system from the Alectra Control Room and adhere to the UWPC.
- Assist with responses to system and customer power outages on a 24/7 basis; troubleshoot and restore power as needed.
- Participate in on-call duties and emergency call-out as required.
- Complete inspections of newly installed or modified distribution plant in accordance with Reg. 22/04 and Alectra s Construction Verification Program, including completing the Record of Inspection and Inspection Certificates.
- Assist with training of Apprentice Power Cable Technicians.
- Maintain knowledge of safety legislation, EUSR rules, Alectra policies, and safe work practices; report unsafe conditions or practices.
- The incumbent may be asked to perform other related duties as assigned.
Education & Specialized Knowledge
- Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or recognized equivalent.
- Journeyman Underground Power Cable Technician Certificate or recognized equivalent.
- Two-year power line technician college program would be an asset.
Experience
- Minimum four (4) years hands-on experience on underground electrical distribution systems up to 44 kV.
- Minimum four (4) years hands-on experience with PILC cable, splices and related components.
Skills / Abilities / Competencies
- Physically fit to perform duties and able to work in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Proficient in operating all equipment related to the trade.
- Ability to interpret work orders, specifications, standards and instructions; interpret prints, sketches and diagrams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work with coworkers and the public.
- Team-oriented with collaborative work style.
- Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements.
- Working knowledge of EUSR rules, UWPC and related safety regulations.
- Valid Class A driver s license with a Z endorsement.
- Strong understanding of ESA rules and regulations relevant to electrical distribution construction and maintenance.
- Outdoor work with exposure to possible hazards and adverse conditions.
