Hours of work: 80 hours every 2 weeks, weekdays, and 1 weekend off per month.
This position is with our Good Shepherd Centre's Men’s Centre. Reporting to the Kitchen Manager/Kitchen Supervisor, the Cook enhances the dignity and quality of life of our clients, visitors and staff by ensuring that all persons accessing the services of the Kitchen are treated with dignity, respect, hospitality, flexibility and compassion.
Responsibilities- Carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission and Values of Good Shepherd Centres.
- Provide leadership and role modelling consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Centres.
- Provide service in a dignified and respectful manner that reflects the charism of Good Shepherd Centres and integrates anti-oppression/anti-racism frameworks.
- Work as an effective team member with other staff and volunteers.
- Prepare, present and serve nutritious and attractive meals with variety, snacks, and any food required for Programs of Good Shepherd Centres.
- Maintain confidentiality of information obtained through the course of work.
- Assist with safe and timely preparation of all meals, snacks and any foods requested as directed.
- Maintain a tidy, clean and safe work area at all times.
- Assist in cleaning the kitchen and all food storage areas, including refrigerators and freezers, meeting Health and Safety Standards.
- Assist in rotation of perishables and utilization of food before spoilage occurs.
- Prepare nutritious snacks for Dormitory Guests and bagged lunches for clients when meals are not available.
- Assist in receiving, storing and retrieving all foods, whether purchased or donated.
- Operate kitchen equipment safely; report any malfunctions to the Supervisor or designate.
- Attend staff meetings as required.
- Perform any other duties related to the Ministries of the Good Shepherd Centres as directed by the Kitchen Manager/Kitchen Supervisor, and/or Director.
- Observe all Good Shepherd health and safety rules and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Minimum 2-year diploma from a recognized Culinary Management/Food Services Program, or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in the hospitality industry.
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Availability, Flexibility, Adaptability, Hospitality and Dignity.
- Valid driver’s license and clean abstract is a necessity for this role.
- CPR/First Aid certification and WHMIS training.
- Ability to adapt in a fast-paced and changing work environment.
- Creativity and flexibility in achieving desired outcomes.

- Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Subject to police clearance per Human Rights Code; suitability for employment will be determined based on the criminal reference status.
