Overview

An externship experience at an NVA hospital gives students the opportunity to understand day-to-day operations and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, they share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Village Cat Clinic — Ancaster, Ontario

Village Cat Clinic offers an enriching externship for veterinary students passionate about feline medicine. Established in 1995, the clinic is dedicated to high-quality, compassionate care tailored to each cat’s unique needs. The clinic has a team of highly skilled professionals, including a board-certified feline specialist, and stays updated on the latest advancements in feline healthcare. With a focus on a stress-free environment, the clinic is AAFP Cat Friendly Gold Certified and emphasizes Fear Free practices.

Externs will gain hands-on experience in a variety of services within a supportive and educational setting, including laser therapy, nutrition counseling, advanced diagnostics, and surgery.

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, and dentistry services.
  • Observe, assist, or perform surgical procedures and participate in the medical management of patients.
  • Enhance communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Qualifications / Eligibility

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. Students in their 4th year or clinical year are encouraged to apply. Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Details on the stipend program are provided separately by the clinic.
