Responsibilities- Perform labouring duties on a daily basis for the maintenance of various City facilities, parks, roads, cemeteries, infrastructure and golf courses.
- Operate a variety of equipment, light duty vehicles, machinery and power and hand-held tools.
- Work in all outdoor environments; duties include climbing, lifting, bending, kneeling, stooping, walking, and handling materials to support maintenance work.
- Be available to work the full summer work-term (early May to Labour Day) and be prepared for rotating shifts and weekends; assignments may be at multiple City locations.
The Summer work-term for a General Labourer Summer Student position will commence early May and run until Labour Day in September. You must be available for the entire term and may be assigned to multiple locations across the City.
Sections and preferred qualifications- Parks/Cemeteries/Horticulture: Preference given to candidates with landscape construction and/or parks maintenance, cemetery maintenance, garden centre/greenhouse, agricultural, marina backgrounds; completion of at least 1 year in horticultural college/university programs. Availability for rotating shifts and weekends; may work in remote locations.
- Play Structures: Preference given to students with shop, construction and/or painting experience.
- Golf & Stadium Operations: May rotate between municipal golf courses and stadium; term from late April to Labour Day with potential early mornings, days, weekends, evenings; preference for turf management, lawn care, and 1 year (2 semesters) of turf studies; duties include general maintenance, use of small engine equipment, event setup/teardown.
- Waste Collection: Assist full-time crew in waste collection; ability to lift up to 23 kg (50 lbs) or more; typical hours 6:00 am – 2:00 pm during summer.
- Roads: Assist with road maintenance; handheld tools, shoveling tar, traffic direction; preference for candidates with construction/engineering/skills.
- Traffic: 10-hour shifts; possible night shifts; ability to work at heights and lift up to 70 lbs; comfortable around moving traffic;
Health & Safety training provided;
Class G driver’s license (non-probationary) mandatory. - Forestry: Planting/removal/storm debris cleanup and general tree maintenance; preference for 1 year of study in Arboriculture/Horticulture/Science;
Class G license mandatory. - Fleet & Facilities: Outdoor property maintenance; ability to lift 30–50 lbs;
Class G license required. - Dundurn Castle Historic Kitchen Garden: Garden maintenance and interpretation; experience in museums/history/education/customer service preferred; schedule includes some evenings/weekends.
