The General Counsel is an executive leader who is responsible for providing practical and business oriented legal guidance across all Collective Arts business units. In this role you will strengthen corporate governance, legal/regulatory compliance, and risk management as Collective Arts continues to innovate and grow.

Reporting directly to the CEO, this role acts as both a strategic advisor and a hands on leader, ensuring legal judgment is accessible early and embedded in the decision making process. This role is designed to make legal judgment more accessible to Senior Leaders, reduce friction and cost in routine legal work, and ensure legal decision making supports creativity, innovation, and execution.

A

typical day as General Counsel Includes:
  • Providing practical legal guidance to Senior Leaders across Collective Arts business units
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating routine commercial agreements including vendor, supplier, customer, distributor, and confidentiality agreements
  • Maintaining and evolving contract templates, negotiation playbooks, and legal processes to improve efficiency and consistency
  • Advising business leaders on contractual structure, obligations, and risk in a clear, commercially grounded way
  • Providing guidance when necessary to the Human Resources team on employment related compliance, risk management, and policy development
  • Supporting corporate governance activities including board and shareholder resolutions, corporate records, and subsidiary filings (in coordination with external counsel)
  • Monitoring regulatory developments relevant to the Company’s operations and providing initial assessments and guidance
  • Coordinating government affairs and policy engagement where appropriate
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for external legal counsel, determining when matters should be handled internally versus externally
  • Managing outside counsel scope, budgets, and outcomes to ensure cost-effective, value-aligned legal support
  • Identifying legal risks early and recommending practical mitigation strategies that balance rigor with business reality
How your time will be organized:
  • Commercial & Operational Legal Support (40%): Contract drafting and negotiation, commercial advisory, template and playbook development
  • Corporate Governance & Legal Hygiene (20%): Corporate records, board materials, filings, audit and transaction readiness
  • Outside Counsel Management (20%): Coordinating external firms, managing budgets, and ensuring efficient use of counsel
  • Strategic Advisory, Regulatory & Risk Management (20%): Leadership advisory, regulatory monitoring, government affairs coordination, and early risk identification
  • Employment & HR Legal (10%): Human Resources legal guidance and support with contractor agreements/arrangements
We are looking for candidates who have/are:
  • 5+ years of legal experience
  • Experience gained through a combination of:
    In-house legal roles and/or Law firm experience (associate or counsel level)
  • Hold an active license with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Strong working experience in drafting commercial contracts and being a leader in contract negotiations
  • Experience with employment law is considered an asset
  • Corporate governance and corporate record-keeping
  • Comfortable operating as a hands on individual contributor in a growing organization
  • Experience working closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams
  • Practical, business-oriented legal judgment
  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-moving, values-driven, creative environments
  • Mindset that views legal as a guardrail and enabler, not a gatekeeper
