Job OverviewThe Manager, Accounting is responsible for developing and supporting a high‑performing accounting team, providing hands‑on leadership and oversight of the month‑end close process, vendor payments, taxation reporting and planning, reconciliation oversight, and year‑end audit. This role plays a key part in preparing monthly financial statements, with a focus on balance sheet control and expense management. The Manager represents the Finance Department on internal projects, drives process improvements, and supports strategic financial initiatives that contribute to the Credit Union's overall success.
Responsibilities- Lead and mentor a team of accounting professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
- Develop and implement best practices to strengthen internal controls over accounts payable (AP) and month‑end reporting, driving efficiency and accuracy.
- Oversee system upgrades and process automation for AP and employee expense modules.
- Serve as a superuser for the General Ledger (D365 F&O), Black Line (Reconciliation & Task Modules), and Mesatek (Match‑It).
- Manage aspects of tax compliance, including filings, HST returns, and planning for all entities; monitor legislative changes and liaise with external advisors.
- Direct and oversee the reconciliation review process for all General Ledger accounts.
- Ensure proper classification of expenditures, review and approve month‑end journal entries, and oversee general ledger account reconciliations and payment batches.
- Recommend and implement changes to accounting policies and procedures to enhance efficiency and internal controls.
- Play a key role in preparing the annual financial plan, particularly for taxation and expense management.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of processes, procedures, and internal controls.
- Monitor and report on Credit Union expenditures, ensuring compliance with corporate policies.
- Collaborate with branch and department managers to resolve accounting issues and support their needs.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of HST‑related filings and self‑assessments.
- Manage the monthly close process, ensuring all costs are appropriately recorded and reconciled.
- Act as the Finance representative for wire approvals, process changes, and issue resolution.
- Coordinate external and internal audits, prepare schedules, respond to auditor inquiries, and implement recommendations.
- Report to the Board on financial status and key business areas.
- Champion health and safety within the team.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Post‑secondary degree in accounting, finance, or business, and a CPA designation in good standing.
- At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory roles.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS, corporate taxation, and ERP systems; experience in financial services is an asset.
- Advanced analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and identify trends.
- Superior proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel), Co‑Pilot, and general ledger software.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and approachable leadership style.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing demands.
- Demonstrated integrity, trustworthiness, and commitment to doing the right thing.
- Experience supporting a unionized workforce is considered an asset.
