Lead Fire Safety Advisor

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Lead Fire Safety Advisor to provide expert professional advice and support to the Trust’s managers, staff and partners to ensure compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Act 2005 and supporting Health Technical Memorandum 05 – Fire Safety in Healthcare requirements. The role involves specialising in the design and maintenance of fire safety systems at existing and new premises, providing training and risk assessments, and liaising with local building control, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Services, and internal estates teams.
Mainduties of the job
- Maintain and update the CHFT fire strategy in line with changing legislation and developments.
- Prepare and submit an Annual Fire Safety report to the Trust Board detailing progress and proposed improvements.
- Ensure all premises have up‑to‑date fire risk assessments and action plans are implemented.
- Act independently to manage fire safety risk issues, authorise termination of unsafe work, and record risks on the Trust Risk Register.
- Arrange and conduct fire drills/evacuations in partnership with departmental and health centre managers.
- Work closely with Estates and PFI Estates managers to maintain fire‑fighting equipment and conduct Preventive Maintenance Plans (PPMs).
- Provide instruction and practice on safe evacuation procedures for patients and personnel.
- Investigate fire incidents, share lessons learned and reduce recurrence risk.
- Give expert fire advice on service and building development.
- Serve as the primary contact with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for liaison, site visits, drills, and information on fire protection arrangements.
- Maintain records of fire training, risk assessments and bi‑monthly performance reports to the Resilience and Safety Group.
- Support the training of a Trainee Fire Safety Advisor.
- Ensure all fire safety related budgets and contracted services are delivered within allocated budgets.
- Engage in continuous professional development, meet Trust policies, and maintain professional registration.

Qualifications & Training- Science or engineering‑based education or extensive experience in fire safety.
- Certificate in Training Practice or extensive experience preparing and delivering training.
- Membership of a professional organisation such as the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) or Institute of Fire Prevention Officers (IFPO).
- Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety or equivalent.
- Registered as a fire risk assessor with a recognised accreditation body.
- Fire engineering or fire safety degree or other relevant academic qualification.
- Corporate membership of professional organisations such as IFE or IOSH.
- Professional qualification in a fire‑related subject.
- Training in healthcare fire safety.
- Good computer literacy and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to use AutoCAD.
- Substantial experience of working in fire safety.
- Ability to devise, prepare and deliver training courses.
- Extensive experience working across organisational boundaries to improve standards.
- Experience and knowledge of undertaking fire risk assessments.
- Knowledge of fire safety, fire risk management, fire legislation and codes of practice & fire safety training.
- Ability to undertake fire safety audits.
- Practical knowledge and interpretation of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
- Understanding of fire modelling techniques.
- Knowledge of risk management techniques.
- Practical knowledge and interpretation of the Building Regulations 2010.
- Knowledge of medical gases.
- Previous experience in the NHS or Local Authority setting or a similar complex environment.
