The Regional Beach Coordinator provides leadership and oversight for beach operations, ensuring safe, high-quality aquatic experiences for their assigned region. This role supervises beach staff, manages instructional programs, and promotes water safety awareness. The Regional Beach Coordinator leads staff training, enforces safety standards, and ensures operational excellence through effective planning, communication, and program evaluation. Acting as a key liaison between staff, patrons, and partner agencies (i.e., Lifesaving Society, Emergency Health Services, various Municipal Business Units), they uphold Halifax Aquatics’ commitment to safety, professionalism, and community engagement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead staff training and development, including pre-season camps and ongoing in-service programs to maintain high safety and supervision standards.
  • Coordinate beach staffing and scheduling, monitor performance, and ensure accurate reporting and compliance with policies and guidelines.
  • Promote water safety and community engagement through education, outreach, and support of beach safety initiatives and projects.

  • Oversee equipment management, including distribution, maintenance, and accountability for all assets.
  • Manage administrative functions, such as payroll, budget tracking, personnel records, and seasonal operational reporting.
  • Collaborate with partner agencies and community organizations to enhance beach safety and program delivery, support special projects like training camps, exams, and water quality testing.
  • Provide direct service when needed, acting as a swim instructor, lifeguard, or examiner during staff shortages or certification processes.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard – Waterfront Option (minimum 1 year experience required)
  • Current Intermediate Workplace First Aid, CPR-C & AED from a CSA-recognized organization
  • Current Lifesaving Society Airway Management
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Instructor (or YMCA Instructor), Lifesaving Instructor, and First Aid Instructor certifications (or willingness and demonstrated ability to obtain before contract start)
  • Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver’s license
  • Ability to work in a multi-tasked environment with proven communication, organizational, time management, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • National Lifeguard Waterfront Instructor/Examiner certification preferred
  • Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
    A physical screening is part of the application process and includes:
  • 400-meter timed swim
  • 50-meter swim and carry
  • Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful completion of training requirements
  • Successful completion/recertification of National Lifeguard – Waterfront Option
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.
