Our challenge

We are seeking a skilled Database Developer and Data Modeler with expertise in designing efficient database schemas, writing complex database code, and optimizing query performance. The ideal candidate will play a key role in translating business requirements into effective data models, developing and maintaining database objects, and ensuring optimal query performance through tuning and troubleshooting.

Additional Information*

The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Halifax, NS is CAD $80k – CAD $90k/year & benefits (see below).

The Role

Responsibilities:

Data Modelling (Highest Priority):

  • Build and optimize database schemas based on simplified but clear business requirements.
  • Design Entity-Relationship diagrams, relationships, and normalization strategies.
  • Example tasks include creating tables for job candidates and work history (companies, job titles, dates).
  • SQL Query Development:

  • Write and optimize SQL queries based on the designed schema.
  • Query and Performance Tuning & Troubleshooting:

  • Discuss and implement indexing strategies to enhance query performance.
  • Optimize database queries and troubleshoot performance issues.
  • Apply fundamental database principles to maintain system efficiency.
  • Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 8+ years’ experience with SQL Server or similar databases.
  • Proven experience in data modeling based on business requirements.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Data Modeling (including ER diagrams, relationships, normalization).
  • Ability to design schemas from detailed business requirements.
  • Proven expertise in SQL query development, including complex joins, subqueries, and aggregations.
  • Good understanding of indexes, performance tuning, and optimization strategies.
  • Experience in writing views, stored procedures, triggers, and other database objects
  • Preferred, but not required:

  • Experience with data warehousing and ETL processes.
  • Familiarity with data modeling tools (e.g., ER/Studio, Power Designer).
  • Knowledge of No
