About the Opportunity

Orthoptist is an allied health profession that specializes in the diagnosis and management of disorders of eye movements and associated visual dysfunctions. The Orthoptist performs a series of highly specialized investigative procedures for the purpose of documenting and diagnosing eye movement disorders. The Orthoptist interprets the diagnostic data and makes recommendations to the referring ophthalmologist regarding treatment options. The Orthoptist assumes responsibility for follow-up of patients undergoing orthoptic treatment and those requiring successive evaluation.

The Orthoptist confers with the referring Ophthalmologist regarding surgical and/or medical treatment where appropriate and counsels patients regarding ocular diagnoses, treatment plans and outcome expectations.

The Orthoptist performs a wide range of specialized, highly technical procedures to collect the necessary diagnostic data for the management and treatment of a wide variety of ocular disorders. The Orthoptist is highly skilled in refraction, assessment of visual fields, low vision assessment, Potential Acuity Meter testing, ophthalmic photography, ocular ultrasonography, keratometry, optic disc tomography and specular microscopy. Both aspects of this position include a significant role in the didactic and practical teaching of medical students, orthoptic/ophthalmic medical technology students and ophthalmology residents.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Baccalaureate degree plus two year training program, or Master's degree in clinical vision science
  • Graduate of an accredited Orthoptics/Ophthalmic Medical Technologists program
  • Orthoptist as certified by the Canadian Orthoptic Council JCAHPO certification at the technologist level
  • Previous orthoptic technologist experience preferred
  • Excellent organizational, time management, stress management, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work independently
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Hours

  • 1 Year, Temporary Long Assignment, part-time position (50% FTE); 37.5 hours biweekly

Compensation and Benefits

$37.35 - $49.55 Hourly
