As a key technical expert within our shipbuilding team, the Welding Engineer brings deep knowledge of fusion joining processes and plays a vital role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and innovation of our welding operations. In this role, you’ll provide subject‑matter expertise, guide Welder Technicians through testing activities, and collaborate closely with production teams to uphold our highest standards of workmanship.

You’ll also lead initiatives to advance welding technologies and introduce new applications that support our evolving design and production needs. Working under the direction of the Lead Welding Engineer or Welding Manager, you will develop and execute welding development plans, conduct weld procedure testing, author weld procedures, and offer hands‑on support to the shop floor.

This position carries ownership of key deliverables within a 3–12 month horizon and offers the opportunity to make a visible impact across production, quality, and innovation.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering or scientific discipline.

Specialist training in Welding Engineering, CWB Recognition is desirable.

P.Eng designation or equivalent is required.

5+ years of shipbuilding or relevant engineering experience is desirable.

An excellent knowledge of FCAW and GTAW, with automatic and mechanized weld experience being desirable.

Knowledge of weld procedure development in accordance with classification society material rules or equivalent national standards.

Strong working knowledge of MS Office suite, SharePoint, with the ability to independently learn to operate new technical software packages.

Ability to resolve technical welding and material problems to achieve first time quality.

Demonstrate knowledge relating to practical aspects of welding and inspection.

Ability to read and understand specifications and structural and outfit drawings.

Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.

Responsibilities

Develop weld procedures by planning, testing, and qualifying processes to meet engineering and quality standards.

Create technical welding documentation and provide expert technical guidance to support production, engineering, and quality teams.

Evaluate new welding equipment through trials and assessments, recommending solutions that improve productivity and quality.

Deliver on‑site technical support by troubleshooting welding issues and advising welders and supervisors in real time.

Support in‑production QC by reviewing weld quality, assisting with defect resolution, and contributing to continuous improvement.
