Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual position of Summer Outdoor Day Camp Leader at the Adventure Earth Centre (Fleming Park & Shubie Park locations).

The Adventure Earth Centre engages children, youth and families in nature-based experiential programs in environmental/earth education, youth leadership, and outdoor recreation. We use the principles of Earth Education, including the use of characters and storytelling.
Successful applicants may be working in day camps. Programs include day camps for 6–9-year-olds, and for 10–12-year-olds, as well as with youth leaders aged 13-18.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Learn the principles of Earth Education, maintain the Adventure Earth Centre’s core values, understand and uphold HRM policies and proceduresConfidently set up program sites and deliver assigned programs to participants according to our manuals, content, and delivery methods.Participate in check ins and debriefs each dayEstablish and maintain group community standards, support other leaders by role modelling positive behaviours, and use appropriate techniques of behaviour guidanceOrganize, manage and maintain equipment and suppliesEnsure the safety and positive experience of participants, youth leaders and other staff at all timesOrganize and lead out trip programs and experiencesSupport youth leaders in their development by assisting Coordinators with goal setting, supervision and mentorship, support, feedback, and evaluations. Assist with the completion of evaluations for each youth leader at the completion of programs.Include youth leaders in meetings and debriefsSupport persons with diverse needs and disabilities in programs (e.g. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, developing individualized plans when needed, etc.)QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Must have a first aid certification, valid through to August 28th, 2026 or willing to obtainMust have experience leading either children or youth in an outdoor, environmental education or recreational settingConsidered an Asset:
Canoeing certificationClass 5 driver’s licenceCurrent Bronze Cross or National Lifeguard Service certificationPrevious experience working day camps and/or overnight camps at the Adventure Earth Programs or St Mary’s Boat ClubAdvanced first aidStudies in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education or similar coursesAt least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with childrenPrevious leadership experience with outdoor, environmental and/or earth educationUnderstanding of Healthy Childhood DevelopmentCanoeing/kayaking certification an assetPrevious experience working with persons with disabilities.Conditions of Employment:
Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS trainingApplicants must be available to attend all orientations/training sessions (training and orientation subject to change)Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiringStaff are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from work sites.Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditionsSecurity Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
