Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for the casual full-time position of Summer Outdoor Kayak Paddle Night Instructor with the Adventure Earth Centre’s St. Mary’s Boat Club location.

The Adventure Earth Centre engages children, youth and families in nature-based experiential programs in environmental/earth education, youth leadership, and outdoor recreation. As part of the Halifax Municipality’s Parks and Recreation services, the Adventure Earth staff work toward building a healthy and sustainable future for our children and youth, our communities, and the Earth.

With our core values of community, learning, safety, sustainability, magic, and excellence as a foundation, we provide opportunities to reconnect with the natural world, to pursue a healthy and active lifestyle, to develop personal and leadership skills, to give back to the community, and to connect with other like-minded people.

Programs include kayak paddle night classes for ages 18+ and 13-17.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn the principles of Earth Education, maintain the Adventure Earth Centre’s core values, understand and uphold HRM policies and procedures
  • Attend all required training sessions
  • Confidently set up sites and deliver assigned programs to participants according to program manuals, content, and delivery methods.
  • Establish and maintain group community standards, support other leaders by role modelling positive behaviours, and use appropriate techniques of behaviour guidance
  • Organize, manage and maintain equipment and supplies
  • Ensure the safety and positive experience of participants, and other staff at all times
  • Support persons with diverse needs and disabilities in programs (e.g., lifting procedures, adapting activities, developing individualized plans when needed, etc.)
  • Safely navigate The Northwest Arm in Halifax with groups of paddlers.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

  • Current certification in Emergency First Aid including Level C CPR
  • Previous experience with youth working in an outdoor adventure or recreation setting.
  • Previous leadership experience with outdoor, environmental and/or earth education
  • Previous experience with the Adventure Earth Centre an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License an asset
  • Restricted Operator's License (Maritime) – VFH Radio Training an asset
  • Pleasure Craft Operator card an asset
  • Paddle Canada or ORCKA Canoe certification an asset
  • Previous experience working with persons with disabilities an asset
  • Advanced First Aid an asset
  • Studies in Outdoor Recreation, Environmental Education or similar courses an asset
  • Restricted operators license an asset
  • Pleasure craft operator card an asset
  • Conditions of Employment:
  • Applicants must be willing to obtain WHMIS training
  • Copies of certification must be submitted upon hiring
  • Staff are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from work sites
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check

    Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates, who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

    WORK STATUS: Casual part time mid June 2026 up to September 24th 2026 plus training (virtual, e-learning and in person) March-June

    HOURS OF WORK: Evening Work:
    June, July & August – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 5:30 – 8:30 September:
    Monday & Tuesday 5:30 – 8:00

    SALARY: Non-Union; $19.75 per hour (plus 4% vacation pay).

    WORK LOCATION: Adventure Earth Centre - St Mary’s Boat Club, 1641 Fairfield Rd, Halifax. Applicants will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the Adventure Earth Centre locations.
