Overview
Forensic Nurse - As Needed role at Meritus Health. Provide comprehensive forensic nursing care to victims of violence across the lifespan using evidence-based practice. Maintain clinical competency and participate in continuing education related to medical/forensic issues as outlined by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Coordinate care with the multi-disciplinary team involved in the investigation and with other health care providers.
Responsibilities- Provide comprehensive forensic nursing care to victims of violence across the lifespan.
- Use evidence-based practice and coordinate with the multi-disciplinary team and other health care providers involved in investigations.
- Education - ASN required. BSN preferred. Previously grandfathered active RN’s who graduated from an accredited nursing school as a Diploma RN will continue to have ASN requirement waived.
- Experience - Minimum of one-year acute care experience preferred. Other nursing experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Licensure/Certification - Current license to practice as Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland, or a compact-state RN license with appropriate verification as required by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Maryland certification as an adult/adolescent forensic nurse examiner (FNE-A) must be obtained within 6 months of completing the course; pediatric FNE-P within 6 months of course completion. Trainings provided if not already licensed.
National SANE-A, SANE-P, GFN-C or AFN-C certifications preferred. BLS (CPR) required per policy.
- Keen analytical ability and attention to detail with strong critical thinking.
- Proficient in evidence collection for victims and suspects; competent in forensic photography.
- Ability to perform forensic nursing duties in emergency department, inpatient, and community settings; maintain objectivity and confidentiality; trauma-informed care.
- Strong teamwork with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in stressful environments and communicate effectively with victims, perpetrators, and a multi-disciplinary team.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; may serve as an expert or fact witness in forensic cases.
