The Phlebotomy Supervisor monitors all pre-analytical activities performed in Meritus Medical Laboratory facilities and collection sites. In compliance with CLIA regulations, the Supervisor oversees all phlebotomy procedures to ensure they meet prescribed standards. This position performs functional duties in the pre-analytic and analytic phases (such as bleeding time) in the laboratory path of workflow. The Supervisor complies with CLIA standards listed as responsibilities for high-complexity general supervisors under 42 CFR 493.1463.
Responsibilities- The general supervisor must be accessible to testing personnel to provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Department Medical Directors. Alternative back-up may include the Medical Director, department supervisor, or shift supervisor.
- Provide day-to-day supervision of waived, moderate, and high-complexity test performance by testing personnel.
- As delegated by the Medical Director, ensure that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Ensure that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
- Identify and provide orientation and training to all testing personnel and students.
- Evaluate and document the performance of all individuals responsible for waived, moderate, and high-complexity testing.
- Education
:
High school diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or Chemistry preferred. - Experience
:
Five years of phlebotomy experience required. Progressive roles of increasing responsibility are highly desirable. - Licensure/Certification
:
Current BLS certification required in compliance with policy. Certification from an approved phlebotomy program preferred.
Must be proficient with neonates, infants, children, adults and the elder.
